Ice-T Skeptical of Soulja Boy's 'Juice' Remake

Getty Images (2)

Ice-T made headlines in 2008 after claiming that Soulja Boy is responsible for "killing hip-hop" and branding his song 'Crank Dat' as "garbage." But after squashing the beef, the gangsta rapper has responded to Soulja Boy's recent announcement to remake the classic film 'Juice.'

"At some point, somebody gotta stop it. I don't know. I came out, I made some statements. I'm like, yo son, I don't know. Do you, dude. Do you," he told Shade45's Morning Show. "It's kind of like if the masses accept it, it just shows you the state we're in. C'mon man, you think I'd try to remake Pac's movie, even though I'm from the school? C'mon son! Good luck though."

He also downplayed the obstacles that young rappers face in this day and age, claiming that if he were a new artist, he would be at the top of the game.

MUST WATCH: The Batman Complex

I have to give a shout out to my good buddy Matt Campobasso who showed me this today.  In an ingenious bit of having waaaaaay too much time on your hands, the fan who made this fake trailer took bits of Inception, The Machinist, The Dark Knight, and Batman Begins, among others, and cooked up a pretty bad-ass idea for a movie.  It doesn't exist, but if it did, I would definitely go see it.  How 'bout you?

Alex Pettyfer Behaving Badly

Not a happy camper
Not a happy camper

Oh dear, Alex Pettyfer did not hold anything back in his recent interview with VMAN magazine. He dissed Los Angeles, the acting industry and women in general.

"L.A. is growing on me a little bit but it's still a s***hole," Alex said. "I think it's this insidious pool where nearly everyone lives in fear. Geographically it's fantastic, but socially it's disgusting. I wish they'd run all the c**ts out." Wonder what his potential employers must think of this!

"Being an actor is like being in prison," he went on to say. "You go, serve your time, you try and replicate Johnny Depp's career and then you move to Paris."

The I Am Number Four actor, in the same expletive-laden interview, also revealed a tattoo he has above his crotch which says "thank you". "In case I forget to say it," he explains naughtily. Um yeah, no wonder Dianna Agron is no longer seeing him.

Movie Review - Water for Elephants

BY ROBERT HAMMERLE, guest contributor to Hammervision

poster_water_for_elephants.jpg

Curiously, "Water for Elephants" is a rather lightweight pleasure, functioning as a bastard offspring of a daytime TV Soap Opera and James Cameron's colossal hit "Titanic" (1997). While the illicit romance between Reese Witherspoon's Marlena and Robert Pattison's Jacob ignites even fewer sparks than that between Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's "Australia" (2008), it is a film you are likely to enjoy if you can simply sit there uncritically. In a sense, it's kind of like the same feeling you get when having a glass of wine after taking a vicodin. (Or so I am told.)

Yes, it is absolutely true that there is little real chemistry between Pattison and Witherspoon. Like his character Edward Cullen in the increasingly regrettable "Twilight" films, Pattison largely moons around while longing for Witherspoon. Thankfully, his pensive brooding over her is repeated interrupted when her husband August, played spectacularly by Christoph Waltz, literally beats the holy hell out of him.

Ms. Witherspoon brings little depth to her femme fatale, but she certainly looks gorgeous in her Depression Era gowns, not to mention scantily clad as a circus performer riding a large elephant. In addition, both Mr. Pattison and Mr. Waltz look quite good as they repeatedly appear in tuxedos, a fact that I'm sure will not go unnoticed by many women in the audience. Let me just say that costume designer Jacqueline West may well be recognized for her work here come award season.

Despite the fact that "Water" is billed as a hot romantic film, it is the aforementioned romance that is its weakest link. What causes it to rise from the ashes of cheap romantic fare are two truly outstanding performances by Mr. Waltz and the legendary Hal Holbrook.

Though he only appears at the beginning and end of this film, Mr. Holbrook is as memorable as his Oscar nominated performance in Sean Penn's "Into the Wild" (2007). Again appearing in the role of an elderly, elegant man wistfully looking back on his past, "Water for Elephants" is a story told entirely through flashbacks as Mr. Holbrook (Old Jacob) tells about his experiences in the circus in 1931. However, it is revealing that there is far more emotional resonance in Old Jacob's telling of the story than the actual story itself. On the other hand, even with Mr. Holbrook's magnificence contribution to this film, it wouldn't work on any level without the utterly captivating performance of Mr. Waltz as August, the manager of both the struggling Benzini Brothers Circus and his twisted marriage. Quite frankly, Mr. Waltz's stunning performance is every bit as galvanizing as his Oscar winning role in Tarantino's "Inglorious Bastards" (2009). He dominates the screen as a psychotic man who at any given moment can morph from being utterly charming to being wickedly violent.

Waltz's August is not so much married to his wife as he possesses her as another member of his circus. Like everyone else employed by August, she stays with him out of a combination of excitement and fear. It is impossible to take your eyes off of Waltz as he functions as a mesmerizing monster from a lower rung of Dante's Inferno.

"Water" is also immeasurably helped by a collection of supporting performances that give an honest, gritty depiction of life on the road during the Great Depression. These were desperate men in desperate times, and it is important to remember what life was like in our country before the social safety net was created under FDR, a safety net that is directly under assault by Republicans in Congress today.

Furthermore, since there is an elephant in the title of this movie, it gives nothing away to reveal that one does appear that serves to save August's struggling road show. It is further ironic that the emotion generated by Pattison and Witherspoon's attachment to this gentle pachyderm while trying to save her from August's fits of rage are far more powerful than anything the two of them can generate even when seen together in bed. And speaking of them being in bed, why is it that the man is always seen removing his shirt while movie starlets like Witherspoon strategically stay semi-clothed while purporting to make love?

In the end, "Water for Elephants" reminds me of a moment in "The Big Chill" (1983) when Kevin Kline caught William Hurt watching some mindless show on TV. When he asked him how he could possibly waste time watching something so banal, Hurt responded in words to the effect, "I find it somehow soothing. I can just sit here and just let it wash over me."

And there, my friends, you have the perfect description of this film. Visually resplendent and containing two magnificent performances, you could do far worse with two hours of your time.

Your man will love this vintage Spring Rhapsody Cake

? Day 103 of Vintage 365 ?

Whereas modem women have nearly unmentionable (this being a family friendly blog!) suggestions pelted at them from the glossy covers of magazines such as Cosmo, as to how one can please their man and get him to love you (has anyone else ever wondered why magazines that are supposedly for women are so often filled with ways not so much to ensure that us ladies are satisfied, but that the men in our lives are?), vintage gals - according to this charmingly illustrated Swans Down flour ad - simply had to whip up one of these beautiful looking Spring Rhapsody Cake (which is claims, men positively adore).

{Click here for a larger version of this inviting vintage Spring Rhapsody Cake recipe.}

Featuring food colouring tinted seven minute frosting (my favourite kind of frosting in the world; when I was growing up it was always affectionately called "marshmallow frosting" at my house due to the similarity in taste and colour it bears to marshmallows) and utterly darling carved gumdrop tulips, this cheerful dessert is a cinch to make (especially if you use a cake mix - as this recipe suggests - for the base, though of course you could just as easily put any white or yellow cake recipe you fancy to work here).

Swans Down cake flour has been on the market since 1895 and is still going strong today. Though I've never baked with it myself (we don't have that brand up here north of the 49th), I've encountered numerous vintage recipes for it over the years and have generally thought they looked both delicious and easy to create.

I was drawn to this delightful recipe (which comes via Woof Nanny's Flickr stream) and wanted to share it with you all because the moment I spied it, my mind rushed to thoughts of what a perfect cake it would be for Easter (which is just around the corner!).

Whether you bake this lovely vintage cake for the mister in your life, yourself, a friend, or a whole crowd, its pretty decorating job and classic flavours are sure to please anyone - man or woman - at your table! :)

Bon apptit!

Platinum and Emerald Rings that Wow for Engagements or Otherwise

On a whim, I decided that today we should showcase emerald rings made with platinum. I think emerald looks especially nice with a halo of diamonds (or two) outlining it for effect. You’ll see that in the first two rings I’m featuring, although they’re entirely different in how they look – the first is a classic ring, the second is an antique art deco ring. If you are particular about the carats of diamonds, I’ve listed that information so you know what is included with each pretty ring. Any of these platinum and emerald rings would be great to use as an engagement ring. It just depends on what kind of ring you’d like. If emerald is your birthstone, or green your favorite color, an emerald engagement ring sounds right for you. It’s being called the disease of the 21st century as an estimated 5.4 million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. It is the sixth-leading cause of death across all ages in the United States, but many Americans still do not know much about this illness. The one-hour special will look into Alzheimer’s disease, who gets it and why, the race to find effective treatments and a possible cure.

Host Larry King will be joined by people who have been touched by Alzheimer’s disease and will include interviews with former First Lady Laura Bush and California’s former First Lady and Alzheimer’s activist Maria Shriver; actors Seth Rogen, and Angie Dickinson; David Hyde Pierce; TV host Leeza Gibbons; football star Terrell Owens and son of President Ronald Reagan, Ron Reagan. In addition to visiting the Mayo Clinic, Larry King will visit the cutting-edge Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health at the Cleveland Clinic in Las Vegas, and he will be joined by Ron Reagan. While there, one of them will take a brain scan that will indicate if he is at risk for Alzheimer’s or other memory disorders, and one will opt out. Tune in and as they will share the results with the audience and talk to Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, Director, Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and Larry Ruvo, philanthropist and visionary, to see how doctors are treating patients and what people can do to diminish their risk for Alzheimer’s.

The special hour will also broadcast on CNNi and will re-air on Saturday, May 7 at 8pm ET/PT. For additional information please visit CNN.com.

Wrangle your paper clutter with this lovely vintage wall organizer

? Day 107 of Vintage 365 ?

There's something about springtime, with its effervescent sunlight, longer hours of warmth (which I couldn't help but describe to my husband the other nights as being magical in their wonderfulness and serene beauty), that makes you want to shake the proverbial cobwebs from your mind, delight in each passing moment, and set your house in order.

It's no wonder that the term spring cleaning exists. During the sullen months of winter, drab and grey, bone chillingly cold and fraught with unpredictable weather, one so often naturally wants to gravitate indoors, to nest and draw comfort from their surroundings. However, when the frost finally melts and songbirds begin chirping once more, what was once cozy in the dim evening light of January can look positively cluttered in April's glistening morning sunshine.

For those like myself who live in modest sized quarters - or who are seeking ways in which to get more out of whatever amount of space they have - one of the most practically ways to organize is upwards.

By this I mean, instead of just expanding your possessions merely horizontally to the left and right, look skyward and seek ways in which to organize vertically. Shelves and bookcases can certainly help in this regard, but sometimes you need more storage in a spot that's simply too small for such a piece of furniture, in which cases options like pocketed wall holders can be just what the home decor doctor ordered.

Take for example, this marvellously charming, shabby chic vintage wall organizer that I spied on etsy recently. Featuring images of four chickens/roosters and three slots, this elegantly farm girl glamorous piece is the sort of the excellently practical organizational item that can really help get paper clutter offer the counter, table and desk and neatly sorted in one handy-dandy spot.

Made of authentically aged (aka, charmingly worn), printed tin and sporting a keyhole handing at the top, this understatedly beautiful wall hanging measures 20" high x 4.5" wide (each pocket has a depth of 4.5") and would be a great spot in which to roundup everything from your child's school notices to take-away menus, receipts to scraps accumulated from your paper crafting activities.

Should you be feeling the urge to tidy up this spring and are in need of a vintage wall organizer, be sure to hop on over to etsy seller Hipaloo's shop, where you can pick (or, given the chicken theme, should I say ?peck up? Smile) this practically and pretty vintage piece for $39.99.

It's sure to add a fantastic dose of yesteryear style to any room in your hen house (aka, home), while also helping to make this year's spring cleaning go quicker (thus leaving you more time to revel in that magical April sunlight!).

Bisbee, the once booming Arizona mine town recently has been deemed one of the quirkiest towns. At one point in United States history it was said to have been the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco. Until last Saturday I had never been able to experience the visually stimulating town. When we first got to Bisbee we took the kids on a mine tour and they seemed to be very engaged in thoughts of finding treasure deep underground as the tour guide (a retired miner) took us through a quick synopsis of what a day in the life of mining look like. Then as we explored the town itself I kept saying to my husband that it felt like a fake town. Nestled into hills and mountains, Bisbee sets pretty close to the Mexican/Arizona border. The streets are small, random and make no sense. With all of our kids in tow we got to experience antique shops, hippies, artisans, a cute chocolate shop, turquoise galore, dust, cowboys, horses, friendly people and a town that has been covered with colorful paintings. On the way down I was talking to Angela and when I asked her what not to miss in Bisbee she said to look for the building that had a bunch a random items all spray painted red. Weird to some, I still give whoever created this masterpiece props for such creativity.

Then about 30 minutes out of Bisbee lays the town Tombstone which now exists as a tourist stop and a reminder that the West wasn't called the "Wild West" for nothing. The kids really, really liked Tombstone as did I for the mere fact that somebody told me they liked my hat and then looked at my little boy and sad, "This must be your big sister"...bless him for his charm...I liked it even if he were in costume playing his act. What really made me smile was when my Maile pointed to the VW Bus painted on the tin door and stated, "Do you think they sell some good organic fuel over there?" I thought she was extra brilliant to make such a connection until it was pointed out by husband that the movie Cars taught her those street smarts. Kids really do pick up on everything even when you don't think they do...so impressionable. Hopefully out of all of the impressions in my kids life, some of the strongest ones will come from the love that they felt from their parents...and that it will be substantial enough for them to pull through any tough times....cause trust me you there are a chance for those...you all know what I am talking about I'm sure;-)

Well of course my thought process would not be complete if didn't think about how I would want the bed and breakfast decorated if we were to have stayed the night in Bisbee. Want to see the vision of comfort, color, layers, textiles, antiques, and paintings that exist in my mind.....

Enjoying a spot of Lucy Maud Montgomery's springtime poetry

? Day 113 of Vintage 365 ?

Easter weekend should be a time of peace and happiness, of celebrating and holding dear that elements of this resplendent part of the year that matter most to you and your family.

Though we had snow as recently here as Monday the 18th (though to be fair, it was more like a three-part flurry of rain, snow and tiny pea meal sized balls of hail), by and large the world is looking, feeling, and even smelling more like spring (gone is the heady, beautiful scent of wood smoke in the air, in its place the earthy aroma of damp soil and budding verdant grass).

I awoke on this fresh Saturday morning with the words of a poem by beloved early twentieth century Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery dancing like springtime pixies in my mind. While we commonly associate LMM with her superb books (most famous amongst which is the Prince Edward Island classic, Anne of Green Gables), Montgomery was also a gifted poetess who wrote a wonderful array of poems during her lifetime.

The piece below, titled elegantly "Spring Song", is amongst my favourite of her poems, and one that I enjoy rereading each year as spring really and truly begins to come to life in my own corner of the Canadian landscape.

To further help impart of a delightfully seasonal vibe to today's post, below Montgomery's graceful poem, resides a vintage French photo postcard (which comes via Chicks57 on Flickr) of a young girl carrying an oversized basket of spring flowers, that I thought partnered well with this timeless poem.

Spring Song

by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Hark, I hear a robin calling!

List, the wind is from the south!

And the orchard-bloom is falling

Sweet as kisses on the mouth.

In the dreamy vale of beeches

Fair and faint is woven mist,

And the river's orient reaches

Are the palest amethyst.

Every limpid brook is singing

Of the lure of April days;

Every piney glen is ringing

With the maddest roundelays.

Come and let us seek together

Springtime lore of daffodils,

Giving to the golden weather

Greeting on the sun-warm hills.

Ours shall be the moonrise stealing

Through the birches ivory-white;

Ours shall be the mystic healing

Of the velvet-footed night.

Ours shall be the gypsy winding

Of the path with violets blue,

Ours at last the wizard finding

Of the land where dreams come true.

I hope, sweet friends, that this charming look at spring, in its endlessly appealing grace and wonder will help launch your weekend (and Easter Eve!) off on a deeply cheerful note - as it most certainly has mind.
