Fashion: Who Will Wear What To The Oscars

Often referred to as the most famous runway in the world, the Academy Awards show offers fashion houses an unparalleled opportunity to showcase their most spectacular creations to hundreds of millions of television viewers worldwide.
The priceless publicity, and unspoken celebrity endorsements, can also influence mainstream fashion trends for seasons to come -- with an impact, eventually, on the high street.
The timeless allure of a silver or platinum beaded gown has long been a popular choice, and Sandra Bullock, last year's winner of the Best Actress award, chose a spectacular form-fitting gown in silvery tones by Marchesa.
Helen Mirren followed in a silver Badgley Mischka, Kate Winslet in a platinum Yves St. Laurent and Cameron Diaz in a strapless oyster Oscar de la Renta gown with metallic ribbon and gold embroidery.
In previous years both younger actresses like Anne Hathaway (Armani Prive 2009) and Jessica Beal (Prada 2009), and more established stars including Julianne Moore (Calvin Klein 2010) have opted for gold and silver gowns.

Of this year's nominees, perhaps only Michelle Williams, nominated for her role in Blue Valentine, could be persuaded to take this route. Some say Helena Bonham Carter was born for vintage couture, but the quirky British actress is known for a more eccentric and individual look: she always wears Vivienne Westwood with a great deal of panache.
The leading contenders for Best Actress, Natalie Portman for her role in Black Swan and Annette Bening for The Kids Are Alright, each have their own style.
Annette almost invariably wears black Armani; a simple tuxedo or a slightly more elaborate creation, such as the strapless long-sleeved fishtail gown, this time Armani Prive, she chose to wear to the 2005 Oscars.
The very pregnant Natalie -- who met her husband-to-be on the set of Black Swan -- may decide to stick with cult label Rodarte, which created some of the costume designs for the ballet thriller's Swan Lake scenes.
However, she is also a fan of celebrity favorite Lanvin, and now that she is the new face of Christian Dior, there is a good chance she'll opt for a classic custom Dior gown.

She has often favoured Chanel couture as well as Balenciaga, John Galliano for Dior, Tom Ford for both Gucci and Yves St Laurent and, most recently, a daring strapless dress by John Paul Gaultier. But perhaps there comes a time when the allegiance to just one or two designers has run its course.
Marilyn Heston, who represents Alexander McQueen, Nicole Miller and Zac Posen among others, says that stylists have been asking for lesser known designers.
"Maybe there's a backlash to there being X number of people in Versace and Chanel and Dior," she said.
Tom Julian, a fashion consultant and style expert for Oscar.com, agreed.
"How many times does Gwyneth Paltrow wear Tom Ford? A lot of actresses realise that after five years they don't want to be wearing the same designer," he said. AFP Relaxnews

Getting in a little pre-Oscar action, Nicole Kidman showed up at the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards today (February 26). As usual, the ?Moulin Rouge? actress gave the paparazzi plenty to drool over as she hammed it up in the arrivals area clad in a bright red frock prior to the big event. And Nicole won?t just be a casual spectator this evening - she?s scheduled to hand out one of the night?s coveted awards while also nominated for Best Actress for her work in "Rabbit Hole". OMG, is it May yet? The coming of 'Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty'
We're still three months away from the 2011 Met Gala honoring Alexander McQueen, but my fashion glands are already salivating (gross?). At a ceremony in London this week, the organizers of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed details about the exhibit, which will feature more than 100 signature creations including the bumster trouser, kimono jacket and origami frock coat.
On hand at the ceremony were exhibit chairs Fran�ois-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek-Pinault (yes, that Salma Hayek), and co-hosts Anna Wintour and Stella McCartney. Their third co-host Colin Firth was absent, mostly likely due to kingly, speechy Oscar promotion. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty opens May 4 and runs through July 31.

'American Idol' recap: Beatles night, and more cuts
Here's Janell on last night's Beatles-tastic American Idol, in which we were promised a Top 24, but only got to see some of the cuts. (Uh, spoiler alert?):
Do you even know how much show they packed into this show tonight? Like, all of it. All of the show. Hardly any time for fluff pieces, even. I don’t even have time to tell you what I’m going to tell you, so I’m just going to jump in and tell you.
Remember last week, when two rooms of contestants were put through to the next round, and they ran out into the giant hallway and screamed a lot? Whilst they were screaming, the judges came out and said hey, um, so all y’all jump onto a bus and let’s shake this thing down to Vegas. Let’s kick it Beatles-style, get in some mondo product placement, and if you survive Vegas, then we’ll let you sing for us again in an airplane hangar. Who’s down with that?
Omniscient narrator Ryan Seacrest (and I just typo’d R’yan,;he should totally add a silent apostrophe) informs us that we’re down to 61 contestants. They’ve divided up into duos and trios (so much show that we didn’t even see any group-forming drama) and it looks like they randomly chose songs from a box, but then later there’s talk of song choice, so let’s collectively agree that that song box didn’t happen. Or did it? They caravan over to the Mirage hotel, where Cirque du Soleil performs a show set to Beatles music. This is convenient because these bus-riding ne’er-do-wells need a stage on which to get their Beatles groove (on? I’ve grammared myself into a corner), and this one has some random wacky stage props.

American Idol: Stop It, Nigel
I do have a few comments about what I saw last night during the...GROUP ROUND!
1. Much like "fetch," Uncle Nigel has to stop trying to make the drama happen. At this point, no one tunes into Idol for the Hollywood Week shenanigans. We tune in to see good singers, singers with whom we will spend the next three months of our lives. We don't care about Star Boobs and her inability to find a group to house her...erm...talents.
2. Oh, yeah and...What was with the stupid grouping issues? Because the day one auditioners had a leg up on the day two folks, the contestants were told that each group had to contain at least one person from day one and one person from day two. This just seemed silly and unnecessary. Maybe if you're so concerned about "fairness," Nigel, don't pass out the group round song list to the contestants until, you know, you actually want them to start practicing together.
3. Inconsistent judging. Several groups right in the beginning of the auditions were pretty darned awful. And each member was told by Jennifer Lopez that they had advanced to the next round. Then there were other groups that were much better (the girls who sang to Steven Tyler come to mind) and several members of those groups were cut.
4. Getting rid of Giovanni Ribisi. The diminutive musician from Nashville who was forced to spend the week with his ex-girlfriend obviously didn't really want to stay in the competition. More reason to keep him then, Nigel! There's your drama, sir.

Cheryl Cole Discusses Charity With Prince Charles

Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole has met with Prince Charles to discuss her plans for a new charity.
Cole is set to launch a new foundation in aid of the Prince's Trust, a charity set up by the Prince of Wales in 1976 to help disadvantaged young people start their own businesses and get on their feet.
“Too many young people grow up thinking no-one cares and don’t believe they can make anything of themselves,” says Cole. "They have so much potential – but can go off the rails without the right care and support. I want my Foundation to help them realise their potential and get their lives on track.
“I have always been a great admirer of the work of the Prince’s Trust with disadvantaged young people across the UK. It’s the perfect charity for my Foundation to support.”

'American Idol' recap: Hooray for Hollywood?
Janell recaps last night's Hollywood audition fake-out. Take it away, Janell:
Welcome to Hollywood, y’all! But - twist! It’s not Hollywood week, just another round of auditions in L.A. For this occasion, Randy is wearing bright gold shoes, J.Lo is wearing (and working) booty shorts, and Steven is wearing an Aerosmith t-shirt. Some people might find that over the top, but I am strangely mesmerized by his bare arms, so it’s a yes from me. (And, speaking of bare arms and Over the Top, Sylvester Stallone arm wrestling movie, anyone? Soundtrack by Kenny Loggins [“Meet Me Halfway”]? Learning life lessons while driving a semi with an estranged son? To use the hipster slang that I just learned today, arm wrestling is srs bsns. Srsly.)
The producers of American Idol would like you to know that God did not send them to Los Angeles for the sole purpose of having Victoria Garrett audition. Just in case you run into Victoria and she tells you otherwise. Victoria would also tell you that “everybody can’t sing like J.Lo.”
Movie Review - Gnomeo & Juliet (***)
We've gone a whole six weeks or so without a new movie for kids in theaters, so the timing on Gnomeo & Juliet couldn't be better. This Disney/Touchstone production - originally set up at Miramax - borrows elements from Toy Story while taking a page (or two) directly out of Shakespeare's classic tale of doomed lovers. Parents - fret not though. The ending of Gnomeo is a lot happier than what Shakespeare intended. The movie itself is mostly enjoyable, inoffensive fluff that will keep the kids happy and parents mildly amused.
Set in the backyard of two warring houses, Gnomeo & Juliet tells the story of two garden gnomes who fall in love despite their family's wishes. The basic plot structure is recycled Shakespeare, though for huge stretches of the movie it hardly bears a resemblance. These garden gnomes come to life while humans are away, and enjoy drag racing on lawnmowers. The whole movie is set to Elton John songs - some new, most classics. It's a peculiar choice (I'm not sure what connects Elton John to lawn ornaments), but certainly a welcome one. Stylistic choices - be they right or wrong - are always better than no choices at all.
Gnomeo is directed by Kelly Asbury, a co-director on the far-superior Shrek 2. The script is by a committee of about 20 different people. Okay, maybe not that many, but the end credit for screenplay took up the entire screen so let that tell you something. If the story seems a bit incoherent at first, don't worry - the movie finds its footing as it progresses. You may even find yourself touched by the story of a lonely, plastic pink flamingo - I was. In any event, viewers can always marvel at the detailed textures on the gnomes (seriously, how long did it take to animate every ceramic crater or piece of chipped paint?!) and wondering which famous British actor is voicing which character. For the record, the voice cast includes James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Jason Statham, and PatrickStewart, among others - an impressive lot, to be sure. Lame puns aside, this one's alright.

First there was Belinda Heggen mocking her co-anchor Mark Aiston's, um, size and now this team of four anchors who spent two full minutes talking about "long stabby things." Personally, I don't want my dick referenced in the same sentence as stabbing. Be a gentle lover, ok?

'The Bachelor': Could this GET any more awkward?

My favorite part is this tidbit about Alli and Brad's one-on-one date:
I don't care how adventurous a girl is, walking through a dark cave with bats fluttering around your head and then having a "picnic" on a soaking wet blanket on a cold rock is no one's ideal date. But things only got worse when the pair went to dinner, where Alli seemed completely oblivious to the fact that there was no chemistry between [her] and Brad. I cringed when she started telling Brad how she dumped her last boyfriend because she couldn't see standing next to him at the altar, and Brad followed by saying that was the way he actually felt about her. Brutal.
And dude, Michelle, just go, OK?

"We're working on our own brand but I really want to stay away from that whole hip-hop cliche -- 'he's a rapper turned fashion designer, turned actor turned property developer," Tempah explained on 'The Breakfast Show.' Recipe: In-Your-Sleep Chili
So a couple of months ago I bought my first slow-cooker . It?s probably the best kitchen appliance I?ve ever bought for the money (under $40 bucks). I basically prepare everything in the morning, stick it in the crock-pot, leave to work and when I get home dinner is ready. You can make everything in it from main dishes to desserts. So?.from time to time I thought it?d be nice to share with you some of these easy slow-cooked recipes. Here?s the first one I made, called ?In-Your-Sleep Chili? from Better Homes and Gardens Magazine (click here to get the recipe). It was a success with the hubby and super easy to make.I left it cooking for 6 hours on low.
p.s. You can buy a slow-cooker almost anywhere? Target, Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond (just make sure it has automatic turn-off). I bought mine at JCPenney.
