Cate Blanchett Backs Carbon Tax To Stop Climate Change

Australian actors Cate Blanchett and Michael Caton have opened a can of worms in their homeland after filming a PSA urging Australians to back a tax on carbon to combat climate change.

The PSA has been paid for by environmental groups, but opposition political parties say that the ideas are “out of touch” with ordinary Australians, quoting a new poll that shows 48% of voters are against the new tax.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard welcomes the PSA, and launched her own campaign in Sydney on Monday to help one million women reduce their own carbon footprints by a tonne each.

“Now Cate Blanchett has had her voice heard on climate change, that’s appropriate, just as it’s appropriate for one million women to have their voices heard through the One Million Women campaign,” she said.

“What if we say yes to making big companies pay when they pollute our sky,” says Michael Caton. “We’d be saying yes to less carbon pollution. Because yes is what makes this country great.”

Boatloads of glamour on the open seas

? Day 126 of Vintage 365 ?

The breeze was satisfyingly warm like a first bite of a just-baked cherry pie, the light so gorgeous a million painters would fail to adequately capture it's colour precisely. The day was akin to so many others in summers come by, yet also unique, unforgettable, perfect.

Or at least that's what I like to imagine the setting was like for the confident, immensely lovely young woman in this fantastic colour photo from 1948.

This image looks as though it could have been a movie still. The understated glamour of her whole look, the alluringly adventurous setting, and the instantly relatable slice of marine life element of this endearing image make it nothing short of sublime.

Though we're still a few weeks away from the official start of summer, finding this marvelous vintage photo (which comes via ElectroSpark on Flickr) seems to have somehow switched on the summer light bulb for me. Now I?ll sit under it and wait for Mother Nature to catch up and keep me - and this unnamed, absolutely beautiful vintage woman ? company all season long.

Stars Come Out For Storm Victims In The US

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina ripped through Louisiana, leaving almost 2000 people dead and countless more homeless. And now April 2011 has seen one of the worst outbreaks of storms in recent history, to the extent that they have been renamed the ‘2011 Super Outbreak’.

The tornados, which are still in motion, have devastated the South, Midwestern and Northeastern states in America, particularly Alabama. More than 300 lives have been lost and thousands more devastated.

In response to the outbreak, celebrities have come out in droves to help. This month alone, Britney Spears has hosted An Evening of Southern Style in support of the St. Bernard Project, Brad Paisley donated proceeds of his new song to Alabama’s tornado relief fund, Selena Gomez has started a campaign to raise funds for Save the Children's Southeast drive, Kenny Chesney is to donate the proceeds of his upcoming Alabama concert to GiveTuscaloosa.com and Roy Jones JR is urging fans to donate to the relief efforts.

Britney Spears’ evening was supported by many of her A-list friends, such as Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Kelly Osbourne and Kim Kardashian. The evening raised a whopping $200000 for the St Bernard Fund. At the event, Britney said, “The St Bernard Project is an incredible organization whose main focus is rebuilding Louisiana [which is] always in my heart.”

Brad Paisley’s new song ‘Old Alabama’ has reached # 1 in the American Country Music charts and Paisley is donating all artistic royalties to the relief efforts. Randy Owen, who features in the song, has said ’There’s no way to describe the destruction that’s gone on. It’s just a battery of emotion.’

Selena Gomez’ efforts to help Save the Children’s Southeast drive have been mainly focused through Twitter, where she is urging fans to ‘donate $10 to Save the Children Southwest U.S.’s division’. The current amount raised is as yet unknown but with such a dedicated fan base, the response is bound to have been huge.

The Alabama concert that Kenny Chesney is hosting in support of the relief efforts is set to raise a huge amount and Kenny has said he is ‘grateful for the chance to aid [the people of Toscaloosa] in this way.’

Lastly, boxer Roy Jones JR has joined forces with website 8countnews.com to encourage fans to donate to the relief efforts. He’s even given a little extra incentive; every fan that donates $250 or more receives a personal call from Roy and also a personalized, autographed photograph!

The storms continue to devastate the US, moving into Indiana, Missouri, Illinois and other states. Luckily, no lives have been claimed by this round as yet, however there are reports of dozens injured, mobile homes being flipped and roofs being torn off houses.

Miley Cyrus Leaves Mexico City, Remembers Jeff Conway

Finished up with a lengthy string of overseas shows, Miley Cyrus was spotted prepping to depart the International Airport of Mexico City on Friday (May 27). The "Love Song" starlet gave a cheerful wave to paparazzi as she trekked into the International terminal to board the outbound aircraft headed back to the States. As previously reported by GossipCenter, Miley closed out the first round of Gypsy Heart tour shows at Foro Sol the previous night - as she's set for a much-deserved break before heading to Asia and Australia for more gigs beginning June 17th. On a side note, Miss Cyrus was among the many stars paying their respects to late actor Jeff Conway - who passed away earlier today. Rihanna took 'S&M' to the streets of New York City on Friday morning (May 27), when she performed the hit single as part of the 16th annual 'Today Show' Toyota Concert Series.

The 'Loud' creator treated fans to a live performance in Rockefeller Plaza, where she performed 'S&M' in addition to 'What's My Name?,' 'California King Bed' and 'Only Girl (In the World)' from her fifth album.

Sporting her signature red locks, a black patent leather Burberry trench coat and baring her midriff, Rihanna started the performance from the street. En route to the stage, her dancers were forced to step in and help free the pop princess from one overzealous fan, who pulled her in -- at 1:19 into the video of the performance -- for a hug and didn't want to let go.

Help Free The Children With Richard Branson

CharityBuzz.com is currently running a celebrity charity auction that will see two lucky people join Richard Branson at a special cocktail party in Miami on June 25.

According to the charity auction website: "Richard Branson is possibly the most-fascinating man of our time: entrepreneur, explorer, multi-billionaire. And every man on the street we asked in our informal public opinion poll of Branson’s image agrees ? he seems a great guy, someone you’d love to have a beer with and hangout. Maybe it’s his disarming charm, likability and devilish smile. Being a committed environmentalist and philanthropist doesn’t hurt either.

“It would seem that with literally hundreds of business irons in the fire, charity and change for good might take a back seat. Not so. The list of well-organized and well-funded efforts for social good is substantial, and it’s no surprise that Branson’s entrepreneurial approach to social change means more bang for the buck, or pound as it were:

Jay-Z may have a plethora of fans across the globe but he himself is a fan of one special lady: his wife, Beyonce.

Earlier this week the Brooklyn rap star joined the former Destiny's Child frontwoman at the 'American Idol' Season 10 finale, where she debuted '1+1,' a ballad off her forthcoming solo album, '4.' Before B hit the stage to perform for viewers at home and those in the audience, she flexed her vocal chops in her dressing room, all while her husband caught everything on camera.

Hov filmed Beyonce as she ran through the lyrics of her new song, accompanied by a woman playing a keyboard to back her up. In the room were her mother, Tina Knowles and her nephew, Daniel Julez, seated on a black leather sofa. Pusha T Lands New Role on HBO's 'How to Make It in America'

G.O.O.D. Music rapper Kid Cudi landed his first major acting gig with a role on HBO's 'How to Make It in America' TV series, and for the show's second season, his fellow label mate Pusha T will join him on set.

The Virginia rapper is set to appear on at least four episodes of the show's second season, which will air later this year. Producer Scott Verner and writer Ian Edelman confirmed the deal on Twitter, and on Friday morning (May 27), Pusha himself made mention of the new role, writing, "Good morning...Destination: NYC...Mission: "How to Make it in America" Stay Tuned!"

Pusha, who has built a reputation as a "coke rapper" over the years as part of the Clipse, will play a drug dealer on the show, but this time he will be dealing with marijuana. There has been no word yet on the name of Pusha's character, or any clues as to how big his role will be.

P.S. - Flying kites is a work out when the wind isn't quite as steady and strong as needed. Brothers are really good about getting kites to stay in the air.

The kids had perma smiles for the whole 10 minutes that the kite stayed up in the air.

'Dancing With the Stars' recap: Top 3 couples perform

On tonight's performance finale, the finale three couples will take to the dance floor and try to do what they need to do to take home the mirrorball trophy.

First up are Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas, with the samba as their judges' choice dance. Carrie Ann Inaba helps her work out some of the issues she had previously and show how her dancing has matured. She seems to have taken at least some of the advice, thought I do wish she and Mark weren't dressed the same color as the dance floor -- that makes them blend in some, and that's annoying. Len Goodman says he liked what he was watching, though he didn't love the flailing arms section. Bruno Tonioli calls her an ultrasexy bombshell with a firecracker of a performance. Carrie Ann says it was "hot hot hot," and that she listened and went the extra mile. Scores: 10-9-10, for a 29/30.

Bruno visits Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy to advise them on their samba. He tells her she needs to work on her hands and her extension -- and to take her "moments" in the dance. She agrees that she needs to do that, but during the dance, it doesn't seem to stick. Any time she has these turns and moments of extension where she could kind of pause and work the audience, she is mostly looking down and she looks like she's thinking hard about the next step. That said, I don't know that I would have noticed that without Bruno talking about it -- the dance is still fun. Bruno says it was softer, rich and full of lively pleasures. He does say at times she was still looking at the floor instead of playing to the arena. Carrie Ann says it was a really great samba. Len says it was a different style, but still had a lovely naturalness, great choreography, though it could have been a bit crisper. Scores: 9-9-9, for a 27/30.

Calypso St. Barth for Target....

As some of you might already know, the Calypso St. Barth for Target line finally hit stores this week. And with summer right around the corner, there's definitely lots to chose from to help you look trendy and chic while on vacay. The collection includes everything from dresses, hats, bathing suits and accessories all under $80. I stopped by my local Target to check it out for myself and I don't know about you, but I found myself leaning more towards the accessories (beach bags, scarves, hats) than the clothes itself.
