Judi Dench Provides Aid To Somalian Refugees

Actor Judi Dench is the latest celebrity that ShelterBox's brand of aid has impressed. ShelterBox provides, literally, shelter boxes to victims of disaster. The current target is East African refugees who are fleeing into Kenya from the drought in Somalia.
ShelterBox ships their 110-pound plastic boxes containing the equipment most urgently needed for the vulnerable refugees. A sturdy, weather proof, family-sized tent with internal divisions, thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, mosquito nets, water purification equipment, a tool kit including axe, saw, shovel and wire cutters, a wood or multi-fuel burning stove, cooking and eating utensils, and even a children’s pack of books and crayons are all possibilities to fill these boxes according to the disaster at hand, as well as the lightweight, waterproof boxes themselves that can be utilized as food storage containers.
“This is a very effective and immediate way of helping those in extreme distress,” said Dench according to a report in the This Is The West Country paper.
According to ShelterBox’s news page, in one week in August, 1,750 new tents were set up and in one day 900 families were moved in. Besides the basic necessities, though, there is something else that the big green boxes seem to be supplying. When one 14-year-old girl’s family moved into their tent, she said, “It was so nice last night I cried with happiness and went to sleep.”

Three Charged in Murder of Brooklyn Rapper Kampane

Three people have been charged in the grisly murder of a New York City rapper named Kampane, whose burned body was found last week in northern New Jersey.
The Wall Street Journal reports that a 30-year-old Brooklyn man named Randy Manning has been charged with the murder of the 33-year-old aspiring rapper, born Rhian H. Stoute. Bail has been set at $2 million for Manning, who is also being charged with burglary, arson, witness tampering, desecration of human remains and a weapons offense.
Also charged as accessories in the slaying, which apparently stemmed from a dispute over money and was not related to Stoute's rap career, are Manning's girlfriend Natuchka Etienne and friend Delroy E. Clarke, both 23.

Neil Patrick Harris To Be Celebrity Host At Charity Cookout
Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, David Burtka, have joined the L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade Culinary Cookout as the 2011 Honorary Celebrity Hosts.
The event will raise funds and awareness for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) in its quest to find better treatments and cures for all kids with cancer. The cookout is scheduled on Sunday, November 6, 2011 from 12 ? 4PM at Culver Studios. The Presenting Sponsor for the cookout will be Volvo Cars of North America.
“We’re so thrilled that Neil and David have agreed to participate and lend their support to this event,” said Chef Suzanne Goin. “This is not only a culinary celebration for adults; we’ve designed it to celebrate children. We reached out to Neil and David, because as past supporters and new parents, they perfectly represent the compassion that encompasses ALSF.”
The 2nd Annual L.A.
