Al Gore was born in Washington DC in 1948, the son of a US Representative and Senator. His early life was divided between life in the political capital of the United States and the family farm in Tennessee. In the 1970s, he served as a military journalist in Vietnam. 1993 saw Gore become the 45th Vice President of the United States, a position he held under President Bill Clinton until 2001. He narrowly missed out being voted into the Presidency himself in 2000.
Gore founded the Alliance For Climate Protection – which he describes as “a bipartisan non-profit organization that is devoted to changing public opinion in the US and around the world about the urgency of solving the climate crisis” – and is the driving force behind Live Earth.
He is the author of An Inconvenient Truth, a best-selling book on the threat of and solutions to global warming, and the subject of the movie of the same title, which has already become one of the top documentary films in history. His latest book, “The Assault on Reason”, debuted at the top of the New York Times best seller list when it was released in May of 2007, and in September 2007 his interactive cable network, Current TV, won an Emmy.

Will you continue to write uplifting music or will it be something different for the new material?
I think it can be motivating by being able to relate to people. And it be as real as it can. Be as true to me as it can. Thats just another thing that Im looking forward to. Being able to have the music not just with the words Im saying but the way it sounds. Music says so much. Classical music doesnt have any words but it still says so much. Im hoping to be able to really take time to define my sound, my music.
Whats the inspiration behind your new music?
The inspiration, I guess the best way to describe it is whats on my mind. Whats going on in my head, its hard for me to explain sometimes and I feel like for the first time, I am kinda able to bring it out. I guess thats the way I would describe the direction Im going in right now.
Youll be 21 this year. Any big plans?
No, not really [laughs]. I always like to go out and eat and spend time with my family and friends. Nothing too crazy. I like to keep it pretty low-key.
With so much going on right now, do you still have plans to go back to school?
Yeah, I dont think that theres ever a time when it is too late to go back to school. I would love to take music classes. I love the heart of music and the emotion but I never really got to understand the musical theory and the more technical side of music. Thats something Id love to learn more about. Performing and putting out music is my No. 1 priority right now so thats what Im focusing most on. Im a very spontaneous person unfortunately. A lot of times that can be a bad thing but I try to be sensitive to whatever I feel and whatever changes in what I feel I should do. And keeping in tune with whatever your instincts kind of say.
Have there been any celebs that have left you starstruck?
I was starstruck by Ringo Starr. I was so starstruck that I couldnt even go up to him. I was pretty starstruck with Bono too.

? Day 152 of Vintage 365 ?
Over the years I've developed, picked up or adopted from my youth many dishes which I know by heart inside and out. I don't open a cookbook or go searching online for a recipe when I make them, they're ingrained like the groves in a well worn wooden spoon in my mind. I'm sure many of you have your own reserve of such tried and true, deeply beloved recipes, too.
One that floated into the reportraire last year is a quick-as-flash, very paired down version of vegan chilli that I came up during the dog days of summer, when my husband and I wanted something filling, but devoid of hours spent melting over a hot stove in an even hotter, cramped apartment kitchen. I call the dish, rather un-fussily, Mexican Beans.
It's a simple concoction of kidney (red or white - the mister prefers red, I veer towards white) or black beans, tomato sauce, a little water, diced onions, fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, crushed coriander seeds, bay leaf, sea salt and black pepper, and chilli powder - all of which is cooked together for 20-30 minutes, until the beans have softened and the flavours of the sauce married beautifully.
Neither of us are big fans of spicy dishes, but you could certainly add some fresh or canned chilli peppers as well, if you wanted. To keep this dish on the low fat and calorie side, I don't use any oil, butter, meat or cheese (excluding these ingredients also means it's even easier to whip up a pan of Mexican Beans with store cupboard and a few fresh produce ingredients alone, making it a very economical dish to boot!), but you certainly could (some sharp cheddar grated over top would be a lovely touch).
Recently on Flickr I spotted a somewhat similar recipe from 1948 (which includes ground beef, garlic and little bit of drippings or shortening) that also cooks up relatively quickly (much quicker than the duration for which I generally cook my full-on chilli con carne, which is usually for nothing less than three hours over a low simmer) featuring Hunt's Tomato Sauce called (rather charmingly in a nod to the Western trend of the 40s and 50s) Chuck Wagon Beans.
.{Click here for a larger version of this stick-to-your ribs vintage Hunt's tomato sauce, ground beef and kidney bean recipe, which comes by way of clotho98 on Flickr.}
On this first day of June, with summer already in full swing (temperature wise!) for many - and soon to be here for more still - I thought this super easy bean recipe would be a fun one to share for those days when you want a warm meal, but don't want to pass out from heat stroke after cooking for hours in the kitchen!
Pair it with a salad of straight-from-the-fridge greens, zesty radishes and cooling apple slices, your favourite bread (or cornbread), and an icy drink and you?ve got a meal that?s filling, healthy and a snap to put together any day of the week.
I hope that this vintage recipe post finds you each doing terrifically and gearing up for an awesome sixth month of the year. Happiest June wishes, and summertime cooking, my wonderful friends!

? Day 208 of Vintage 365 ?
It's anything but nutritious or low in sugar, but there is something about the classic, wonderfully sugary taste of Kool-Aid in all its vibrant rainbow hues that makes it so well suited to the scorching hot days of summer and ensures it deserves a recipe post this month.
Long before a smiling pitcher was bursting through walls, proclaiming "Oh, Yeah!" in the process, Kool-Aid was a popular drink with fans of all ages. First introduced in 1927 by Nebraskan Edwin Perkins, Kool-Aid's low price, simplicity of use, and assortment of tasty flavours quickly made it one of the most beloved soft drinks on the market.
When Kool-Aid initially debuted it came in seven flavours (Cherry, Grape, Lemon-Lime, Orange, Raspberry, Strawberry, and Root Beer - the latter of which has been discontinued for decades), though as devotees of this powdered beverage mix know, scores upon scores of other varieties have come and gone over the year (though some of those original flavours are definitely still on grocery store shelves).
If we hop back in time to 1949 though, the first six flavours listed above were what Kool-Aid shoppers could add to their grocery cart. In the absolutely charming illustrated ad below from 1949, a recipe is featured that shows Kool-Aid lovers how to combine a package of drink mix with cream, milk and sugar to create quick, colourful ice cream in a flash.
{If you've got a sweet tooth and enjoy Kool-Aid (or have youngsters in your life a day), this super fun ice cream recipe is definitely worth giving a spin this summer. Image via clotho98 on Flickr; click here to see a larger version of this great vintage ad.}
Kool-Aid ice cream is a light-hearted, delightfully hued dessert that's been around since at least the 1940s. It's speedy to put together, uses a minimum of ingredients, and is sure to put a big smile on Kool-Aid lovers who are both young and young at heart, while helping to chase off the sweltering summer heat for at least a few sweet minutes.

Neil Patrick Harris gets a huge round of aplause when he's introduced as the guest judge.
Marko and All-Star Chelsea Hightower are first with a Jason Gilkison samba to “Cinema Italiano” (The Ron Fair Remix) by Kate Hudson. Neil says the performance is amazing and dirty. He says Marko is unbelievable. He says he is the guy to beat. Mary says Marko is the "real deal." She says she won't be surprised if he's in the finale. Nigel says he's tremendous.
Sasha dances to “Syrup & Honey” by Duffy. She has a lot of power and energy.
Jordan is paired with All-Star Brandon Bryant for a contemporary routine choreographed by Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden. They dance to "Who You Are" by Jessie J. Jordan does fantastic. She keeps up with Brandon on this super difficult routine. Mary says Jordan is fantastic and fierce. Nigel says Jordan doesn't have many weaknesses. He says his eyes keep returning to Jordan. He then tells the voters to wake up and not put her in the bottom. Neil says she's beautiful and that she should be very pleased.
Jess dances a solo to "Come By Me" by Harry Connick Jr. It's playful and fun.
Tad was joined by All-Star Comfort for a Chuck Maldonado hip hop routine. They dance to "Look At Me" by Chris Brown. I can barely catch my breath. It's a very difficult routine. Nigel says the routine was very fast. He says he outdanced Comfort. Neil says Tad is super likeable. Mary says he is special. "You hit this right out of the ball park," she screamed.
Melanie dances her solo to “You’re The One That I Want” by Angus and Julia Stone. She's her typical fantastic self.
Mitchel teamed up with All Star Melody Lacayanga for a Tyce Diorio Broadway routine to "Take Off With Us" from All That Jazz. Neil says he doesn't get an airplane theme from the routine. "That was not my favorite," Neil says. Mary says it was over done. Nigel says he "over egged the pudding." (Mitchell is in trouble.)
Ricky is next will a solo to "Daybreak Lights” by Cassidy Haley. He's unworldly good.
Clarice is next with a spicy solo to “Royal T” by Crookers featuring Roisin Murphy. She’s having a fantastic night as well.
Caitlynn and All Star Pasha Kovalev are next with a Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo choreographed Argentine Tango routine to “Malajunta” by Orquestra Color Tango. Mary gives it a standing ovation. She says she took her dancing to another level. Nigel says she kept the intensity. Neil says it felt like great theater.
Mitchell is next with his solo. He dances to “This Time” by John Legend.
Sasha dances with All-Star Stephen “Twitch” Boss to "Misty Blue" by Dorothy Moore. The Christopher Scott choreographed hip hop routine is my favorite of the night. I love how the routine uses contemporary dancing with such a old-time feeling song. Nigel is basically speechless. He compares this routine to Twitch’s routine with Alex last season. (That’s a huge compliment. He says that this is the first time he's seen her have chemistry. Neil says it's the best routine of the night. Mary says the number is "sexy." She says the routine has it all. Mary says that Sasha is an "All-Star."
Jordan's solo is next. She dances to “Tonight” by Lyjje Li. Jordan really appears to have stepped up her game. She has definitely limited the stripper dancing.
Jess and Kathryn are next with a Stacey Tookey contemporary routine. They dance to "The Lonley" by Christina Perri. The judges gush over Jess. Nigel says the routine has more lifts than Joan Rivers' face. Ouch!
Melanie and Pasha are next with a Viennese waltz. They dance a Jason Gilkison routine to “Everybody Hurts” by Tina Arena. It is magical. Mary says it looks like Melanie floated across the stage. She says she's at the top of the leader board. Neil says that Melanie is a super hero. "You're easily my favorite dancer on the show," he says.
Caitlynn is next with a solo. She dances to "Cosmic Love" by Florence and the Machine.

Travis Wall and Carmen Electra are the guest judges this evening. And they actually do a pretty good job.
First up is a group dance by the guys choreographed by Justin Giles to “Prague” by Damien Rice. The routine is about the seven stages of grief. Marko appears to be the star of the routine. The cameras focus on him for the majority of the piece.
After the commercial break, Marko is back with Melanie for a jazz routine choreographed by Ray Leeper. They dance to "Americano" by Lady Gaga. They dance the routine effortlessly. Travis says it is an amazing way to start the show. Travis says Marko is one of the strongest males in the competition. He adds that Melanie is the strongest in the competition. Carmen says that they are passionate. She adds that Melanie's legs are ridiculous. Judge Mary Murphy is impressed. Mary says that Marko dominates routines. Judge Nigel Lythgoe says that their technique matches their performance.

? Day 154 of Vintage 365 ?
Allen Ginsberg is a man who is nearly impossible to sum up in a few words - or even paragraphs for that matter. A brilliant poet, cultural visionary, deeply creative soul, and one of the most prominent members of the beat generation, Ginsberg was the type of person who transcended mere descriptions, preferring perhaps to be as open to interpretation as his writing.
I discovered this fascinating poet at an early age (probably in grade 4, which is when I first recall learning of the Beats, including Ginsburg's close friends Kerouac, Burroughs and Ferlinghetti), read his work extensively in my teen years, and discovered upon meeting my husband that he too was a follower of this controversial, immeasurably creative writer.
Ginsberg's work is an opus of tantalizingly thought-provoking, sometimes wacky, often sagely, nearly always entertaining poetry and other writing that captured the good, the bad, the brutal, and the often unspoken elements of a tumultuous generation.
Throughout his life Ginsberg rarely held back, opting to speak his mind in such a way as to ensure he would open and impact those of his readers and listeners (Allen often gave live readings - and made many recordings - of his work during his career).
Though the world sadly lost Allen Ginsberg in 1997, it was on this date (June 3rd) in 1926 that this fascinating, free speech promoting, iconic beat writer was born.
In celebration of his many literary and cultural contributions, I wanted to share a reading (transformed into a lovely Youtube clip featuring background photos of Allen with some of his friends and peers) that Ginsberg made of his superb poem America (which is a good contender for my favourite of all his works).
*Please note there is some adult language and subject matter in this piece and as such I do recommend one listens to it in the presence of young children.*
During his life Ginsberg came to know a great many famous people from Bob Dylan to Paul McCartney, yet I do not believe that he let these relationships - nor the fame he amassed - ever go to his head. To the very end Allen Ginsberg was a man - and writer - of the masses. He spoke up, often very expressively, for the causes he believed in and against the things he saw as injustices.
In poems like Howl and America, as well as a great many of his other visionary works, Ginsberg stepped outside the conventional realm that most poets of the day were residing in to bring a raw slice of truth to the world, which remain as meaningful and worthy of our attention today as when it was envisions and penned decades ago.
